I was born and raised in a Nigeria that placed premium value on honest work, decency, accountability. It was a vastly different country I returned to after 20 years in my adopted country, United States of America.
There was a major shift in the culture following several military coups and the resulting dog eat dog world that seemed prevalent was somewhat similar to what I felt may have been obtainable in the West during the era that inspired the genre of films that came to be known as Film Noir.
This ”new normal” was entirely unfamiliar to me as the lines between the good and bad guys had become blurred. People became very wealthy overnight but few seemed to care whether such wealth was ill-gotten as long as there was plenty to go round.
As a filmmaker, I am drawn to telling stories that capture the essence of my observations and “La Femme Anjola” is one such film. With this project, I have the opportunity to present a classic noir tale with a distinctively African twist; one that speaks for the times as it chronicles the perilous journey of a young middle-class man who is simply a product of today’s Nigeria.
This project was a labor of love by crew and cast, an ambitious project even by today’s Nollywood standards. I am thankful that we can present this film directly to our audiences around the world at the same time and give them not only the opportunity to watch an interesting film but also reward filmmakers directly for their hard work.
